New Brunswick withdraws
Did you know that in 2002 the
New Brunswick Soccer Association realized that they were not on par to
compete at these nation All-Star tournaments and withdrew from all-star
competition? However, New Brunswick will continue to participate in national
club competition both at the minor and senior levels.
In 2001, I coached the Burin
Peninsula U16Boys to a Provincial A Championship and then competed at
the National U16 Championships in Edmonton, Alberta. It was after the completion
of that tournament that I made the following recommendation to both the
Canadian Soccer Association and the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association:
National minor soccer tournaments should be divided into a two-tier system.
After carefully reviewing the
scores and the 2002 standings, I will reiterate that the Newfoundland and
Labrador soccer officials should endorse this proposal and bring forward
a motion to the Canadian Soccer Association that they should adopt a national
two tier system for minor soccer.
Provincial A Tournaments
The Newfoundland and Labrador
Soccer Association have adopted the format that all A tournaments are
tournaments, which are comprised of regional all- stars. These teams usually
come from St. Johns, Mount Pearl, Central, CBS, CBN, Western, Burin Peninsula
and sometimes Labrador is represented.
NLSA Girls A results
This year in Provincial Newfoundland
and Labrador Soccer Association A Girls Tournaments, St. Johns has won
the under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and under 18 age categories. In the mean
time, the Burin Peninsula Soccer Association did not have a team representative
in either of these girls age categories.
NLSA Boys A results
In Provincial Newfoundland
and Labrador Soccer Association A Boys Tournaments, St. Johns has won
the Under 12, Under 14, Under 16, while Mount Pearl has been declared provincial
champions in the Under 18 age category. The Burin Peninsula Soccer Association
only had a single representative - the Under 14 group. The National U14
Boys/ Girls tournament is slated for Kelowna, British Columbia. The National
U16 Boys/ Girls tournament is scheduled for Etobicoke/Vaughn, Ontario,
while Calgary, Alberta will play host to the U18 Boys/ Girls Nationals.
Provincial B Tournaments
The B tournaments are Newfoundland
and Labrador Soccer Association sanctioned tournaments where regional club
champs meet for competition. Usually, these entries have engaged in regional
competition before the NLSA competition.
NLSA B results
According to the results, St.
Johns has demonstrated that their region is the area of Newfoundland and
Labrador presently demonstrating soccer supremacy. St Johns has won the
boys U12, U14 and U16 Provincial B Championships. The St. Johns girls
have captured the U12 and U14 Provincial B Titles.
Burin Peninsula Soccer in
Trouble
To date in 2002, St Johns
have won seven out of a possible eight Provincial A Minor Soccer Tournaments.
They have won five out of a possible seven Provincial B Minor Tournaments.
In senior soccer St. Johns United have also won the Provincial B Intermediate
Championship. This intermediate tournament consisted of twelve teams, and
eleven of those teams came from the Avalon Peninsula. Springdale was the
only outside entry. The Burin Peninsula failed to have a single entry.
The Molson Provincial Senior
Ladies Soccer Championships were played from August 22-24 in Mount Pearl.
The teams registered for this tournament, Guards, Holy Cross-, Feildians,
Mount Pearl and the Avalon All- Stars, were all from the Avalon Peninsula.
Again, the Burin Peninsula failed to have an entry. In addition to the
provincial title that these ladies were playing for, was the right to represent
Newfoundland and Labrador in the National Jubilee Shield championships
which are scheduled for St.Johns/Mount Pearl from October 10 - 14, 2002.
